It is a basilica planned patriarchal cathedral built in the old city center on the historical peninsula of Istanbul by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I between the years 532-537. After the conquest of Istanbul by the Ottomans in 1453, it was converted into a mosque in front of Fatih Sultan Mehmed.
